Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation
Vestibular/balance treatment
The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that process sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movement. Damage to these areas from disease or injury can result in disorders, such as vertigo, which are characterized by poor balance, dizziness, a sense of spinning, nausea and vomiting. These can also result from or be worsened by genetic and/or environmental conditions. Sometimes the causes are unknown. In severe cases, vestibular problems can interfere with a person’s ability to move about freely, operate a motor vehicle, function at work, or participate in leisure activities that involve movement.
Our therapists have specialized training to treat vestibular and balance disorders using hands-on procedures that can habituate dizziness, improve eye-head coordination and fixation of gaze, and retrain balance.
And we have advanced equipment designed specifically
for this purpose.
Ninety million Americans, about 42 percent of the population, will complain of dizziness to their doctors at least once in their lifetime. It is among the top 25 reasons for seeking medical help. By the age of 75, dizziness is one of the most common reasons for seeing a physician.
