Helping you go the distance

RunWell, is a sport-specific performance training program designed to meet the needs of runners regardless of age, experience or level of competition. Robert Wayner, PT, developer and director of the program, trains and treats the athletes.  Kristi Hess, PT, OCS, is a board-certified orthopedic specialist and works with the athletes to help them recover from injury and improve performance.

The program operates in cooperation with the University of Oregon Motion Analysis Laboratory, which uses state-of-the-art motion-capture technology to study the biomechanical factors that contribute to running injuries.

Who can benefit from RunWell?

As a runner, either preparing for a goal race or exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you are continually faced with the tasks of preventing injury and improving performance.  Having a well-balanced musculoskeletal system may allow you to run consistently without injury and to train at a  level that facilitates improved performance.

Underlying the quest for performance is ongoing clinical and demographic research to advance our knowledge of the mechanics of the human body.  Anyone wanting to maintain fitness through running or to achieve anew race personal record regardless of age, background, or innate athletic ability can benefit from programs from RunWell that:

  • Evaluate your training and racing history and past running-related injuries
  • Examine you for factors affecting performance including, but not limited to, form, posture, flexibility, strength, and balance
  • Explain the results to you and, if applicable, your coach in terms you can understand
  • Help develop personalized exercise and training routines to decrease injury risk and elevate training performance

What does a RunWell assessment look like?

  • We start with an interview about your complete running history including level of experience, training and racing history, and what injuries you have sustained, if any.
  • The examination begins with a treadmill and overground running analysis of your walking and running gaits to identify possibie opportunities to improve running form (NOTE: each RunWellparticipant has the option of adding a state-of-the-art, computerized 3D running analysis at the University of Oregon Motion Analysis Laboratory.  See the brochure for details.)
  • Following the gait analysis adetailed examination is completed of your
  1. posture
  2. skeletal structure
  3. balance/motor control
  4. joint range of motion (ROM)
  5. flexibility
  6. specialized strength testing using a dynamometer, a device designed to measure pounds of muscle force for a specific muscle tested
  • After the clinician has analyzed the results, you will receive and discuss a report of the findings, a personalized exercise program, and recommendations on your form and the type of footwear that best suits your needs.

The physical portion of the assessment should take about 45 minutes in-clinic (and 60 to 90 minutes for the UO laboratory gait assessment if you should choose that option.)  This requires that  you come dressed for a workout or bring a change of clothing and footwear.

RunWell collaborates with the University of Oregon Motion Analysis Laboratory on research into movement.  Using advanced technology including three-dimensional motion-capture technology and force plates measuring forces acting on the body throughout the gait cycle, the researchers are able to obtain an accurate assessment of a runner's gait through all planes of motion.

The facility is conducting ongoing research related to the study of running biomechanics and risk factors associated with running-related injuries as well as prevention and rehabilitation of these injuries.
